QM Involvement Supports Institution Accreditation Efforts

If you are preparing for a Higher Learning Commission (“HLC”) visit having a Quality Matters’ Implementation Plan in place is a great idea! Our college (Anoka Technical College) recently had their HLC visit and we asked for 5% of our programs to be allowed to go online. Showing that the college takes online education seriously by having a QM Implementation Plan in place, QM trainings going on at our campus and having reviews started at our college impressed the HLC team and we were granted the right to have an unlimited amount of online programs offered at our college.

In the breakout session with the Anoka Technical College’s Online Committee the reviewer was asking what we were doing on our campus for online education and we were fully prepared for this visit. The reviewer even asked how to do something in her online course that she taught and the online committee was able to help the reviewer with her problem.

It really does not take a whole lot of time to complete the QM Implementation Plan, but it does take dedicated faculty and administration to make sure that you are able to follow through with what you put on the plan. Our college was quite conservative with numbers on the plan so that we are able to meet the commitment of the plan.

If you have an upcoming HLC visit, having a QM Implementation Plan in place is pronounced way to show the team that your college is serious about offering quality online courses.

Using QM for Accreditation Processes

Regardless of whether you are looking down the road for your programmatic or institutional accreditation reaffirmation, Quality Matters (QM) standards can help document your systematic approach for all your online/hybrid courses as a part of your accreditation review process. QM standards 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8, once complied with, can provide programmatic and/or institutional commitment to student support, retention, and success which are normally reviewed by accrediting site visit teams. Also, QM standards 2, 3, and 4 provide any accrediting body with evidence of your systematic effort  to create and align course objectives, activities, and assessments based on your program and/or institutional requirements.
